The frame. uPVC, aluminium and timber frames all insulate well when made properly. Multi-chambered uPVC (we fit Kömmerling and Rehau systems) traps pockets of air; modern aluminium is thermally broken with an insulating barrier through the frame; timber is a natural insulator.
The whole-window rating. Look for the Window Energy Rating (WER) band — A is the top of the everyday scale, with A+ and A++ above it — and the U-value, where lower is better (a good modern window sits around 1.2 to 1.4 W/m²K). The rating covers the finished window, frame and glass together, so it is the number worth comparing.
What you will notice at home
Modern energy-efficient windows lower your heating bills, because less warmth escapes through the glass and frame. Rooms feel warmer and more even, with no cold spots by the window in winter. You will see far less condensation, because warm-edge units keep the inner pane closer to room temperature — which means less of the damp and mould that morning mist can cause.
